COVID-19: UPDATE AS OF MARCH 21, 2020

Dear Vecova Community

These are certainly unprecedented times. Things are evolving very quickly as our governments make new statements every single day. And there’s a sense of stress and concern that is weighing on everyone. It is no different for us and our team as we are working to continue to provide essential services and minimize the impact of COVID-19 on our consumers, our employees, the public and our operations. So, I would like to provide another update.

Earlier this week, I told you about how we’ve been working with our partners and the Government of Canada, the Government of Alberta and the City of Calgary to introduce safeguards to ensure that what we do will keep the risk low for all of you, and to maintain the continuity of our business operations.

Today, we are introducing a number of additional measures to help keep you healthy and safe and to continue to serve you as best as we can. This includes:

  • closing access to our Satellite Office in Canmore to all employees and consumers while continuing to provide essential services to our most vulnerable consumers through other measures
  • closing access to our Main Centre, until further notice, to all consumers while continuing to provide essential services to our most vulnerable consumers through other measures
  • providing access to our Main Centre to essential personnel only to maintain business continuity plans
  • moving our Mental Health Services counselling to teleconference and/or online appointments only
  • reducing hrs of operation at our Bottle Depot
    • Monday – Saturday: 9:00 am to 4:30 pm
    • Sunday: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm
  • introducing service adjustments at our Bottle Depot to increase social distancing. This includes:
    • limiting access into the Bottle Depot to three (3) customers at a time
    • customers will be asked to wait outside if the Bottle Depot is serving the maximum number of customers and to remain at least six (6) feet (the length of a bicycle) apart from the next nearest patron
  • encouraging you if you have not already signed up for our Bottle Pick-Up Service to visit ca to learn more about our Bottle Pick-Up Service and sign-up
  • introducing service adjustments for our Bottle Pick-Up Service to increase social distancing. This includes:
    • suspending door knocks of our Bottle Pick-Up employees
    • reminding you to please keep bottle bags outside on your doorstep (or in the previously agreed upon pick-up location)
  • encouraging you if you have not already signed up for our online training to visit vecova.ca to learn more about our eLearning

This is an extraordinarily difficult time, but Vecova will continue to do all we can for the well-being of our consumers, our employees and the public.

March 16, 2020

Dear Vecova community,

I want to thank you all for your patience during this critical time. Vecova’s goal is to continue to provide essential services and minimize the impact of COVID-19 on Vecova operations, our employees, the individuals we serve and the public as guided by Health Canada, the Government of Alberta and the City of Calgary to ensure that what we do will keep the risk low for all of you. As always, we prioritize the health and safety of our consumers, our employees and the greater Vecova community.

While this situation is unprecedented in many ways, Vecova is thorough in its preparedness. Our Emergency Response team has been working hard with all levels of the organization and external partners to ensure actions are being taken to protect the health of Albertans.

Effectively immediately:

  • All Aquatics, Health and Fitness programs at Vecova have been suspended until further notice.
  • The Health and Wellness area of the building will be closed with no access effective March 17, 2020.
  • The concession will not be open.
  • All facility rentals have been suspended until further notice.
  • All in-class training has been suspended until further notice including the Professional Supports Presentation Series.
  • Due to the cancellations of Vecova’s Essential Skill training, employees may no longer be compliant with policy over the next months. Until further notice, Learning and Development does not require the Request for Extension of Mandatory Training form to be completed.
  • All internal and external events scheduled for March and April have either been postponed or cancelled.
  • All Living Support Services are in full operation.
  • Our main facility operating hours have been changed to 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.
  • Our Canmore facility operating hours remain unchanged.
  • Our Bottle Depot and Pick-Up Service will continue to operate at regular hours until further notice.
  • Aligning with the closure of schools, the Youth Transition and Work Experience program has been suspended until further notice.
  • Aligning with the University of Calgary, our recycling program is suspended until further notice.
  • Aligning with the Calgary Airport Authority, the Baggage Cart Retrieval contract remains in operation until further notice.
  • All new requests for working remotely must be coordinated through Human Resources and area managers.
  • The muster point for the organization will be on the west side lawn of the building (by the swimming pool).

We are taking this situation seriously and acting out of an abundance of caution. As a result, Vecova will continue to be proactive in accordance with our pandemic planning and guidance from Health Canada and Alberta Health Services. This includes:

  • Cleaning common areas more frequently, deepening our efforts in cleaning and disinfecting surfaces and making available cleaning supplies and hand sanitizer.
  • Enacting social distancing protocols and ensuring a 50% capacity load ratio for our meeting rooms.
  • Enacting self-isolation protocols for all employees who are sick or who have returned from travel outside of Canada.
  • Encouraging alternative forms of communication for meetings through telecommunications (Skype, FaceTime and Microsoft Teams).
  • Suspending travel outside of Canada for work; employees are recommended to follow travel advisories for personal travel.
  • Posting signs to remind people of the serious recommendations for self-isolation in the event of illness.

As the Government of Alberta is now moving forward with more aggressive measures to help slow the spread of COVID-19 in Alberta, additional actions may be required in the coming days.

Our Emergency Response team will continue to respond as needed to make sure that we are doing our best during these complicated times and that we are taking proactive measures to ensure the health and well-being of the entire Vecova community.

You are all integral parts of this organization and we are thankful for your support at this time.
