Adapted Recreation Programs

Explore sports and recreation in an inclusive, safe and fun space! Our Adapted Recreation programs give participants the opportunity to gain and grow fundamental motor skills.

Spring 1 program registration begins on January 31 at 8:00 a.m.

Spring 2 program registration begins on March 28 at 8:00 a.m.

ADULT ADAPTED RECREATION

Each week you will experience a different sport or recreational activity and learn the skills you need to participate. All abilities welcome and no previous sports experience is required. *Participants must attend with a support person.

CHILDREN'S ADAPTED RECREATION

Are you ready for the best Saturday ever? Children with ages 6-12 are paired one on one with a university student mentor for a super fun afternoon of games, sports and swimming. All abilities are welcome! This program will fill the first day that registration opens on March 28.

Weekly Schedule

  • 12:30 pm – 1:20 pm  Activities in Studio 2.
  • 1:20 pm – 1:30 pm   Walk to the pool change rooms and get ready to swim assisted by students. Parental assistance is appreciated but not required.
  • 1:30 pm – 2:20 pm   Each child has unstructured one on one pool play time with their student mentor.
  • 1:20 pm – 1:30 pm   Exit the pool and get changed. Parental support is appreciated in the change rooms.

Children’s Adapted Recreation has supportive and compassionate supervision and effort is put into pairing each child with the most suitable student mentor for an enjoyable afternoon of fun!

Caregivers can choose to sit outside Studio 2 or leave Vecova but need to be available by phone during the program. Doors will open at 12:30 pm and no earlier.

YOUTH ADAPTED RECREATION

Are you ready for the best Saturday ever? Youth with ages 13-17 are paired one on one with a university student mentor for a super fun afternoon of games, sports, music, unstructured time and swimming. All abilities are welcome! This program will fill the first day that registration opens on March 28.

  • 3:00 pm – 3:50 pm   Activities in Studio 2.
  • 3:50 pm – 4:00 pm   Walk to the pool change rooms and get ready to swim assisted by students. Caregiver assistance is appreciated but not required.
  • 4:00 pm – 4:50 pm   Each youth has unstructured one on one pool time with their student mentor.
  • 4:50 pm – 5:00 pm   Exit the pool and get changed. Parental support is appreciated in the change rooms.

GENTLE ADAPTED FITNESS

Gentle Adapted Fitness is for those with developmental disabilities who would like to get fit and have fun! Join Louise for a gentle seated workout that is an enjoyable progression from Music and Movement and focuses on experiencing gentle movements with the assistance of a support worker.

 

Each week will begin with a gentle head to toe warm up and then introduces some basic strength exercises using hand weights. We will also work on improving our grip strength, hand-eye coordination and motor stills through fun games. Light stretching will end each class.

 

Do as much or as little as is comfortable for you that day. Join us for an enjoyable 60 minutes of healthy movement and great music!

ADULT ADAPTED AQUATICS

Designed for people with special needs, this new program will center around three main activities – Water Polo, Snorkeling, and the ‘Swim to Survive’ certificate. Participants will improve their aquatic skills and safety knowledge while having fun learning and playing within a team environment. Participants must have an aid or support worker in the water throughout the program.
