JUNIOR LIFEGUARD CLUB
What to Expect During Junior Lifeguard Club (JLC):
Junior Lifeguard Club (JLC) is an exciting program designed to challenge and enhance the swimming skills of participants. Here’s what to expect:
1. Skill and Stroke Development: The class, typically consisting of 24 participants, is split into three groups, allowing for focused instruction. Each group will spend about 40 minutes working on stroke and skill improvement, focusing on core swimming techniques like Front Crawl, Back Crawl, and Breast Stroke. This is an excellent opportunity for participants to refine their form and get extra practice with their main strokes.
2. Lifesaving Skills: The remainder of the class is dedicated to learning essential lifesaving skills, such as item retrievals, treading water/eggbeater, diving, rope throws, throwing assists, in-water towing, and completing obstacle courses. These skills are vital for water safety and are taught in a fun, engaging environment.
3. Caregiver Involvement: Parents and caregivers are encouraged to stay at Vecova during the lessons and watch from the bleachers. This gives them a chance to observe their child’s progress while ensuring the child remains safe and engaged.
4. Intermediate Swim Level Required: Please note that this program is designed for intermediate swimmers. The skills and activities taught in JLC require a solid swimming foundation. For safety reasons, participants must meet the required skill level to ensure they can keep up with the demands of the program and avoid posing a risk to themselves or others.
5. Aquatics Career Pathway: JLC is also a great program for children and youth interested in pursuing a future career in aquatics. The lifesaving skills taught in JLC provide an excellent foundation for those considering a lifeguard or swim instructor path!
