National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Over the past few months, the discoveries of the remains of children buried in unmarked graves at the sites of former residential schools have raised awareness of a national tragedy that must be acknowledged. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada estimate the number of unmarked graves to be 3,200. Vecova is a social purpose-driven organization whose mission is to build a future for people of all abilities where everyone is valued, belongs and thrives. Vecova has an obligation to share the truth about Canada’s residential school system, the impact it has had on Indigenous communities for over a century and the ongoing intergenerational trauma that it has caused. We support the implementation of the 94 recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Final Report. The Government of Canada has declared September 30 the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (Orange Shirt Day). This federal statutory holiday aims to recognize and commemorate the legacy of residential schools and the impact that colonization has had on Canada’s Indigenous communities. Vecova applauds this declaration.
