Looking for inclusive, supportive, and sensory-aware swimming lessons this summer?

Vecova is proud to partner with the Calgary Outdoor Swimming Pools Association (COSPA) to bring its trusted adapted aquatics programming outdoors for the first time! This summer, you can register your child or loved one for adapted swim lessons at Forest Lawn Outdoor Pool.

This new offering is based on our former SwimAbilities program – a name many parents will recognize. Now reimagined as Children’s Adapted Aquatics, this program is designed specifically for children and adults with physical, cognitive, sensory, and emotional disabilities, including those who are autistic or require extra support in the water.

What Makes These Lessons Different?

Vecova’s adapted aquatics lessons focus on building water safety, comfort, and independence in a welcoming, inclusive environment. While this isn’t a private or 1-to-1 lesson, we use a low instructor-to-student ratio of 4:1. That means instructors can tailor the experience to each swimmer, allowing for more personalized attention and meaningful one-to-one moments.

All participants must be accompanied in the water by a parent, caregiver, or aide, ensuring safety, comfort, and continuity between the lesson and home.

Caregivers are not charged a fee to enter or participate in the program.

Many in the community are wondering what’s next after the permanent closure of Vecova’s Aquatics Centre. We’re excited to share that, in collaboration with Vivo, accessible warm water programming will continue in a new location. Vecova and Vivo are working together to keep you connected to inclusive, accessible aquatic opportunities!

We are thrilled that Vivo has stepped in to support our community, as Vecova was one of the few warm water pools in Calgary. Vivo has increased their pool temperature and expanded their programming to welcome former Vecova swimmers. Here’s what you need to know about how this new collaboration works:

What’s Staying the Same?

Warm Water Access: Vivo has warmed their pool to provide a comfortable environment for therapeutic and learn-to-swim programming, just like at Vecova. Continue your aquatic exercise and development in the warm waters you know and love!

Swim Programming: Much of the Vecova programming that you are used to will continue, and with more instructors at Vivo, there are more opportunities available than before. There will be registered programs that open in July, and for now, you can check the Drop-In Schedule for all available drop-in opportunities and group fitness classes.

What’s New?

Location & Registration: Programming will take place at Vivo’s state-of-the-art facility in north-central Calgary. Unlike Vecova, Vivo operates on a membership-based model and allows one week’s advance booking for members, with registration opening up to all after that. Learn more about the perks of being a Vivo Member here and set up your customer account for program registration here

Accessibility Features: Vivo’s warm water leisure pool has a beach-style entry, as well as a lift and water wheelchair in the lap pool, making it easy to access both pools. While there is no sensory room at Vivo, there is a dedicated Sensory Time! Enjoy a lower-sensory experience Monday to Thursday between 1-3 pm – lighting is lowered, the privacy screen is utilized in the pool, and music is low or turned off entirely. Read more about Vivo’s accessible design features in the aquatic area and beyond.

Subsidies & Discounts: Vivo does accept the City of Calgary’s Fair Entry program for a discounted Membership Rate, and program discounts are subsidized through Vivo’s in-house subsidy program, Everybody Plays. For information on available subsidies and discounts at Vivo, head to their website. It is important to note that Vivo is a charity, not a City of Calgary Recreation Facility, so programs and pricing may look different.

Start Dates: Registration for the Spring & Summer Programs is open and ongoing. You can register online or in person! All available programs are viewable and bookable on Vivo’s website

September 30th, on Truth and Reconciliation Day, we take a moment to pause and reflect on the painful history of residential schools and the ongoing impacts of colonization on Indigenous peoples across Canada. This day is about more than just remembering—it’s about understanding the truth of our shared history and committing to meaningful steps toward reconciliation.

At Vecova, we know that reconciliation isn’t something that happens overnight. It’s an ongoing journey, one that challenges us to listen, learn, and act. We are dedicated to making this commitment part of our daily work, ensuring that our programs and services respect the cultures, experiences, and traditions of Indigenous communities.

We believe in the power of community and inclusivity, and we know that by working together, we can create real change. Whether it’s through the way we deliver our services or how we connect with the community, we’re striving to honor Indigenous voices and perspectives in everything we do.

We invite you to join us in learning, listening, and reflecting. Let’s honour the resilience of Indigenous peoples and commit to building a more inclusive, respectful future—together.

Please note that Vecova will be closed this day.
