Thank you for supporting Vecova and helping us create a more inclusive community. We couldn’t do it without you!

We’re incredibly proud to share some exciting news from our Vecova community.

Daniella Paulich, our exceptional Art Therapist, has been named one of The Calgary Herald’s 20 Compelling Calgarians for 2026, an honour that recognizes individuals who are making a meaningful difference in our city.

Through her creativity, compassion, and deep commitment to the people she supports, Daniella uses art therapy to help individuals express themselves, build confidence, and connect in powerful ways. Her work goes far beyond the art itself, it creates space for healing, growth, and belonging.

Daniella’s recognition is a reflection of the heart she brings to her work every day and the positive impact she continues to have across our community.

👏 Please join us in celebrating Daniella and this well-deserved recognition. We’re so proud to have her as part of the Vecova team.

Vecova is proud to stand alongside our community partners in celebrating a week of connection, accessibility, and inclusion across the Bow Valley. From December 3 to December 10, organizations throughout Banff and Canmore are hosting events that highlight the strength, creativity, and diversity of people of all abilities.

This week of programming aligns with the spirit of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, reminding us that inclusive communities aren’t built in a single day, they grow through shared experiences, open dialogue, and accessible spaces where everyone belongs.

Below is a look at what’s happening throughout the week.

Vecova’s Commitment to an Inclusive Future

Vecova is honoured to be part of a network of organizations, including Rocky Mountain Adaptive, Bow Valley Connections Centre, the Alberta World Cup Society, artsPlace, Pride Network, and many others, working to strengthen accessibility and inclusion in our communities.

These events reflect what we believe deeply at Vecova:

  • Inclusion is an ongoing practice.
  • Accessibility is a shared responsibility.
  • Community is strongest when everyone can participate fully.

We invite you to join us throughout this week of learning, celebration, and connection. Together, let’s continue building communities where all people with disabilities can thrive.

At Vecova, we believe that nurturing inclusion starts with meaningful experiences, especially for youth facing unique challenges. Our Youth Program does exactly that by planting confidence, independence, and job-readiness in young hearts. And as a parent who’s witnessed the growth firsthand, Lesley B shares her powerful story.

“I would like to share my experience with the Vecova Youth Program. I strongly recommend this program. My son, Adam, benefited greatly from his participation in his work experience program.

It is difficult to find meaningful programs to work with youth who have a variety of challenges. The Vecova Youth Program met my son where he was, and encouraged him to gain work related skills. The program exceeded our expectations. The practical skill building really helped my son become excited about having a job.

I was impressed with the pre employment preparation, including writing a strong resume and job interview skills. The work experience my son had was definitely a good fit, and he really enjoyed it. His job coach was a very positive presence in his program, and worked extremely hard to help my son succeed.

He really liked his job coach and her style of communicating and encouraging him to do the work to make it an excellent outcome. She encouraged him to do his best, and celebrated his successes. We had good communication with every level of staff in the Youth Program.

My son definitely had a sense of accomplishments with his first job experience. I know going forward my son will use these skills when looking for employment.

This program has played a large role in shaping his future. As a parent, I learned a lot about job searching and working that I can use to support him when he is looking for employment in the future.

I firmly believe that programs like this are vital for helping youth build pathways to success. I strongly advocate for the ongoing support and expansions of the Vecova Youth Program so that more families can experience the same positive impact the we have.”

Lesley B’s story is a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of inclusive programs like Vecova’s Youth Program. Her words echo a universal truth: when youth are given the right support and opportunities, they can thrive in ways that surprise even their families.

Let’s nurture this vision together. Every donation helps ensure youth no matter their challenges, receive the tools, coaching, and work opportunities they deserve.

With your support, we can keep planting seeds of hope, confidence, and independence.

Everyone Belongs At Vecova

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]For many families who come to Vecova, the feeling of belonging starts once they join the Adapted Recreation program. These classes, which include programs for children, youth and adults, are for people who have barriers to sports and other fitness activities. It offers participants a place to gain skills and confidence in a safe, open, and inclusive environment.

For the Tran family, it’s become a place for 10-year-old Duc and 8-year-old An to grow.

When Hieu and his wife, Hong, first learned about the program, they were just simply looking for something for their kids to do on weekends. But now, thanks to the activities and the volunteers who work with the participants, it’s become the highlight of the week for their children.

“Even if I’m 5 minutes late, they both wait at the front door, ready to leave. They’re ready to go. We even cancelled our camping trips so that they won’t miss a class.”

To Hieu, his children’s positive experience is something that can only happen at Vecova. It’s why the Children’s Adapted Recreation program has meant so much to him and his wife.

Hieu compared it to other experiences he and his children have had. Other recreation centres can be overwhelming. They’re especially overwhelming for Duc, who has autism and is non-verbal, and for An, who has ADHD. Other facilities have larger class sizes, distracting wave pools, and instructors who may not be as well-trained in working with people with different abilities. These are things that he’s noticed make it more difficult for many children to focus.

But with Vecova’s Adapted Recreation program, the children get two full hours of activity in both the gym and pool with participants and instructors of all abilities.

“They never get bored. Some may have more fun in the gym, some may have more fun in the pool, but having both offered for two hours is the perfect mix and perfect length. Not too long, not too short.”

For Hieu, the highlight is the group of instructors who run the program, many of whom are volunteers. These individuals make connections with the children in the program. These instructors, some of whom have disabilities themselves, make sure that each child, no matter their ability or circumstance, feels like they belong.

“I know that we have peace of mind that we’ve left Duc and An with a capable group of instructors. It’s a good ratio of instructors to children, and the staff are well-trained. They can deal with any difficulties. It’s a safe place for my kids.”

He continued, “That’s one of the things we were most afraid of when we sent them to the group, especially Duc. He is kind of rigid in his ways. It’s really hard for him to join new or different groups,” Hieu explained. “But somehow, with these instructors, he has no issue with it. They’re all nice, so Duc is more open to interactions with other people. What I’m seeing is like his enlightenment.”

For families with children who have special needs or challenges, Hieu encourages them to consider the Adapted Recreation programs. There’s no better place to find inclusive programming, led by employees who care.

“I truly appreciate the instructors and the program. Vecova fits my family so well. My family belongs at Vecova.”[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”8636″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” onclick=”custom_link” link=”https://vecova.ca/holiday”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/6″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

October 1 marks the start of Disability Employment Awareness (DEAM) month across Canada and in Alberta. DEAM celebrates, educates, raises awareness and promotes employment inclusion within the job market for people with disabilities. Persons with disabilities face barriers to employment and each year DEAM provides an opportunity for employers, people with disabilities, service providers and Canadians to come together to act in removing barriers and creating a more inclusive economy. Throughout the month of October, DEAM events, panel discussion, and activities occur across Canada and Alberta.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/6″][/vc_column][/vc_row]
