If you’ve visited the Bottle Depot lately, you may have noticed a few changes taking place – we’re expanding the list of items that are accepted for recycling! Vecova’s Bottle Depot has partnered with a number of organizations to expand services and help divert more waste from landfills to be recycled or upcycled into new products. Our new partners, and accepted products, now includes:

  • Wine bottle corks, in partnership with ReCork
  • Alkaline, lithium and eCycle batteries, in partnership with Call2Recycle
  • Clothing and textiles, in partnership with Can-West Clothing Recycling through a new drop-bin to be installed in near future
  • Electronics, in partnership with Technotrash Alberta and the City of Calgary
  • Empty fuel canisters for safe disposal and recycling, in partnership with the City of Calgary

We’ve also launched a new Bottle Pick-Up App and extended the Bottle Depot’s hours – now open every day from 8 am – 6 pm! Learn more about Calgary’s only not-for-profit bottle depot here.

We’re thrilled to announce that Ryan Straschnitzki is joining us as Vecova’s first-ever Ambassador! Together, we are joining forces to continue advocating for people of all abilities, shedding light on the obstacles persons with disabilities face in our community.

As an ambassador, Ryan will regularly visit our Main Facility in Calgary to continue his personal community efforts, bringing friends and community members together to play wheelchair sports and using his voice to champion our exceptional programs and services aimed at achieving inclusion for all.

Vecova is thrilled to announce that we have received a generous donation of $55,000 from the Rotary Club of Calgary at Stampede Park! Thanks to their support, we will be creating a brand-new sensory room for our valued consumers.

We would like to express our sincere appreciation to Rotary Club of Calgary at Stampede Park for their dedication to making a difference in the community and helping Vecova Move Forward Together. Your support is truly invaluable, and we are honoured to have you as our partner in this endeavour. The sensory room will provide a safe and engaging environment, that is designed to create a sensory-supportive environment to facilitate wellness and enhance the well-being of our community members. We believe this new addition will significantly contribute to their overall happiness and quality of life.

Applaud a Depot provides Albertans with a simple way to give kudos to their local Depot for a job well done. As a local community Bottle Depot, Vecova is proud of the impact that our inclusive and innovative depot has made. Below is the winning entry, from Carly V.:

“I make a point of going to (Vecova Bottle Depot) because it employs those who may struggle to find a place in the workforce, giving dignity to those with different abilities.”

To celebrate Vecova’s role in the community, the Alberta Bottle Depot Association is hosting an event on Global Recycling Day, March 18, at 11:00 AM at the Vecova Bottle Depot, 20 Research Pl NW in Calgary. Vecova Centre for Disability Services and Research seeks public support after vandalism attack

Calgary, Alberta (December 16, 2022). Vecova Centre for Disability Services and Research will begin its clean-up process in the coming weeks after its facility was vandalized on December 15, 2022. Damage to the facility includes parts of its main building and its on-site property, such as Recycling Services’ trailer and donation bins.  A police report has been filed and we are in the process of reviewing available security footage.

Vecova’s programs and services support persons of all abilities, some of whom are among Calgary’s most vulnerable. The vandalism may have further negative impacts on community initiatives, as the organization will have to potentially divert funds to clean, restore and replace the damage.

“We’re disappointed to have to deal with this, especially during the holiday season,” shares Kyla Martin, Vecova’s Chief Development Officer. “We provide a place of belonging to persons with disabilities and the community. The building itself has been part of some of our consumers’ lives for over fifty years – many of whom lived at our main facility for several years. To see this senseless act of vandalism on a place they love may be upsetting and confusing.”

Vecova is proud to be a community hub where everyone can feel welcomed and that they belong. If any individuals or businesses would like to offer support, donations can be make online at www.vecova.ca or by call 403-284-1121 ext 308.  If anyone would like to help us in the cleanup process please get in touch with the Development team at [email protected].
