Starting this May, Vecova is bringing people together on the field for a new season of inclusive sport, connection, and community. Adaptive Inclusive Rugby, a program designed to make sport more accessible, welcoming, and fun for individuals of all abilities. Delivered in partnership with the Southern Alberta Rugby Union and Lacrossing Barriers, this spring session is all about movement, connection, and confidence in a supportive environment.

Vecova has long been known for creating inclusive recreation opportunities across Calgary, and Adaptive Inclusive Rugby is one of its most exciting seasonal offerings. The program runs through the spring months and is a great way for participants to step into a team sport setting without pressure or barriers.

A welcoming introduction to rugby

Adaptive Inclusive Rugby is designed for people who are new to the sport—or anyone who wants to experience rugby in a safe and supportive way. The focus is not on competition, but on learning the fundamentals of the game through fun, structured activities.

Participants will explore basic skills like passing, movement, teamwork, and game awareness. Coaches guide each session with a focus on encouragement and accessibility, making sure everyone can participate at their own pace.

While some tackle practice equipment such as pads and bags may be introduced for learning technique, the program remains non-contact. This helps keep the experience safe, approachable, and inclusive for all participants.

Who it’s for

This program is open to youth and adults of all abilities, including individuals with disabilities or anyone who may not feel comfortable in traditional sport environments. No prior rugby experience is needed—just a willingness to try something new and be part of a team.

The inclusive nature of the program means participants can build confidence not just in physical skills, but also in social connection and teamwork.

Why it matters

Adaptive Inclusive Rugby is more than just a sport program—it’s a space for belonging. Many participants join to stay active, but they often leave with new friendships, improved confidence, and a stronger sense of community.

Through structured play and supportive coaching, the program helps participants:

  • Build physical literacy and coordination
  • Develop teamwork and communication skills
  • Increase confidence in movement and sport
  • Connect with others in a welcoming environment

Program timing and details

The spring session typically runs from late April through June, meaning May is right in the heart of the season, a great time to join and get involved.

Sessions are held weekly at Calgary Rugby Park, with a consistent schedule that allows participants to build skills over time while staying engaged with their group.

Inclusive Swimming Lessons with Vecova and COSPA

Looking for inclusive, supportive, and sensory-aware swimming lessons this summer?

Registration for Vecova’s Children’s & Adults’ Adapted Aquatics program opens April 14 through the Calgary Outdoor Swimming Pools Association (COSPA) website.

Vecova is proud to once again partner with COSPA to bring our trusted adapted aquatics programming outdoors for another summer season.

This year, families can register for lessons at two outdoor pool locations in Calgary:
• Forest Lawn Outdoor Pool
• South Calgary Outdoor Pool

These programs are designed to provide safe, welcoming swimming experiences for children and adults who benefit from additional support in the water, helping every participant build confidence and water skills at their own pace.

A Program Families Already Know and Trust

Many families will recognize this program from its former name, SwimAbilities.

Now reimagined as Vecova’s Children & Adult’s Adapted Aquatics, the program continues Vecova’s long-standing commitment to adapted recreation and inclusive swimming programs.

Lessons are designed specifically for individuals with:

  • Physical disabilities
  • Cognitive disabilities
  • Sensory differences
  • Emotional or behavioural support needs
  • Autism or other neurodiverse conditions

Our goal is to help every swimmer build confidence, comfort, and water safety skills at their own pace.

What Makes These Lessons Different?

Vecova’s adapted aquatics program focuses on creating a calm, inclusive environment where every participant can succeed.

While these are not private lessons, the program uses a low instructor-to-participant ratio of 4:1, allowing instructors to:

  • Provide more personalized guidance
  • Adjust instruction based on each swimmer’s needs
  • Create meaningful one-to-one moments within the group

All participants are also required to have a parent, caregiver, or aide in the water during the lesson. This helps create a safe and supportive experience while also allowing caregivers to continue practicing skills outside of lessons.

Caregivers are not charged a fee to participate in the program.

As of today, over 500,000 Canadians are living with dementia, and 1 in 5 Canadians has cared for someone with the condition. By 2030, that number could climb to nearly 1 million, underscoring the urgent need for supportive programs. According to the Alzheimer Society, by 2030 Canada could see 187,000 new cases each year. This is equivalent to 512 new diagnoses a day or 21 every hour, a 51% increase in annual new cases compared to 2020.

At Vecova, we believe that wellness goes beyond physical health, it’s about creating spaces where people feel connected, engaged, and supported. That’s why we are proud to provide our Early Stage Dementia Wellness Program, an established program for adults aged 60+ living with early-stage dementia-related conditions.

This program provides participants with the opportunity to engage in twice-weekly, tailored exercise and cognitive activities that are both stimulating and enjoyable. Each session is thoughtfully structured to nurture both body and mind, helping participants build strength, enhance memory, and foster meaningful social connections.

Engaging Themes & Group Discussions
Every week brings a variety of new topics inspired by participants’ interests, creating immersive experiences that spark conversation, creativity, and connection.
Personalized Fitness
Our strength and conditioning program is focused on each participant’s unique abilities and interests. Incorporating both individual and group exercise, our participants have the opportunity to work on cardio, strength and conditioning, balance, and coordination in a safe and supportive environment.
Music Therapy
There is strong evidence that participation in music therapy can enhance mood and support cognitive function. Our music program offers participants meaningful opportunities to connect with others, express creativity, stimulate memory, and experience the joy of making music together.

Social & Community Team Lead, Heather Burke, says  “What really makes our program so special is the kindness and dedication of our team, and the wonderful connections we share with the participants and their families. We love creating a fun and welcoming space where everyone feels valued and part of the community”

Looking for inclusive, supportive, and sensory-aware swimming lessons this summer?

Vecova is proud to partner with the Calgary Outdoor Swimming Pools Association (COSPA) to bring its trusted adapted aquatics programming outdoors for the first time! This summer, you can register your child or loved one for adapted swim lessons at Forest Lawn Outdoor Pool.

What Makes These Lessons Different?

Vecova’s adapted aquatics lessons focus on building water safety, comfort, and independence in a welcoming, inclusive environment. That means instructors can tailor the experience to each swimmer, allowing for more personalized attention and meaningful one-to-one moments.

All participants must be accompanied in the water by a parent, caregiver, or aide, ensuring safety, comfort, and continuity between the lesson and home.
