Over the summer, Vecova hosted our First Annual Vecova 5k Run & Walk and held a 50/50 raffle at our Stampede BBQ in support of our involvement with the Shaw Charity Classic golf tournament, and as part of their Birdies for Kids program presented by AltaLink.
Through these events, we raised over $8,000, which Birdies for Kids matched by 50%, resulting in a total of over $12,000 being raised.
This year, all funds raised are going towards our new Empower Abilities program run by the Vecova Recreation Centre. Empower Abilities is a step-by-step progressive program for children with mild to moderate motor delays and disabilities. The goal is to have each child gain the capacity, confidence and independence that he/she can transition into community recreation or sport.
Children involved in the Empower Abilities program have drawn pictures to help share their stories and experiences in the program. The story series was on display at the tournament and showcases the work being done within Empower Abilities. Those attending the Shaw Charity Classic had the opportunity to learn more about this new program and see first-hand the difference Vecova is making through our Recreation Centre. Exposure from the Birdies for Kids program and the Shaw Charity Classic have helped us share the difference being active and engaged can make in the lives of persons with disabilities.
Thank you to everyone who helped us make this possible.
In case you missed any of our summer events, Vecova held its First Annual Vecova 5k Run & Walk on June 26th where we saw an overwhelming amount of support and participation from staff, clients and the community. Although the day started out a bit damp, we had over 80 participants and volunteers attend the race and raise funds. Our Stampede BBQ had over 300 guests attend, and tickets were purchased for raffle prizes and a 50/50 draw, with all proceeds going towards Birdies for Kids.
