The Vecova Recreation Centre is excited to announce the launch of a new program. Empower Abilities is a program for children (3 to 21 years of age) with mild to moderate motor delays and disabilities. The program provides children with motor planning deficits with activities to improve movement; breaking down skills, working on coordination, balance and motor planning. Once learned, it can boost a child’s self-confidence, potentially decreasing anxiety associated with sport and play, which in turn provides opportunity for growth and socialization.
“We are very excited about the new program,” said Recreation Manager Wendy Roby-Straza. “There is no other program like Empower Abilities. It is a catalyst in teaching motor planning skills, and for children to have better experiences with community sport and recreation.”
The Empower Abilities space is located in the Vecova Recreation Centre and is child-and-adolescent friendly, housing a variety of playful therapy equipment to inspire children to be challenged, to develop, and to grow in their motor and play skills. Empower Abilities programs utilize specialized weight and cardio equipment designed specifically for kids and adolescents, when appropriate. Vecova has hired Julie Pernsky as an on-site physiotherapist for this program.
“This is such a fantastic program. There is such a positive energy from the team and the children,” said Roby-Straza. “The program provides a safe environment for the children to develop their skills and hopefully meet their goals to participate in community activities or to boost self esteem.”
Vecova is offering four Empower Abilities programs in Winter 2016. Two more programs will be added in Fall 2016. Please contact EmpowerAbilities@vecova.ca for more details.
