Community Living Supports assist individuals to live as independently as possible and maintain a home of their choice that is safe, secure, comfortable and affordable. Residential supports may be provided in a variety of settings to assist individuals with developmental disabilities to live in and maintain a home of their choice, participate in the community and live as independently as possible. Supports are individual, customized, flexible and client-driven.
The purpose of Community Living Supports is to focus on personal choice and lifestyle preferences as they relate to the client’s living situation. The key to these supports is to ensure that a client feels safe, secure, comfortable and happy in his/her home. Supports may include skill training and development, overnight support, personal care, assistance with medication and/or health care, household management, developing and maintaining relationships, accessing community resources and accessing satisfying and enjoyable leisure activities.
Community Living Supports may be provided in a range of settings, including:
- staffed overnight residences shared by 2-4 individuals
- homes owned by an individual or his/her family
- supportive roommate situations
- supported independent living
